With his iconic seating collection, Harry Bertoia transformed industrial wire rods into a new furniture form. With its unique bent and welded steel rod construction the chair is exceptionally strong and surprisingly comfortable. The removable leatherette seat cushion is padded with a foam insert for softness. The brightly chromed steel frame pairs nicely with all other modern classic furnishings. Our Bertoia style Wire Side Chair reproduction is made entirely by hand, and is built from chrome steel rods bent into a wire mesh. Though described "mostly air", its construction makes it exceptionally strong, and versatile in its uses. Bertoia chairs are very popular in clean modern designs, but they also work well in almost any sort of eclectic combination of eras and styles. It works great around a dining table, or as additional seating in your living room or home office. You can even mix and match it with other chairs.

About Harry Bertoia

Harry Bertoia immigrated from Italy at the age of 15. After studying art and design (specifically metal sculpture) at various institutes, where he encountered the likes of of Edmund Bacon and Charles Eames, he set up shop as a jewellery designer, as WWII made metal a scarce and expensive material. Following the end of the war, he moved to California, where he participated in a co-op including design icons Eero Saarinen and Charles and Ray Eames developing molded plywood techniques for designing furniture.

Finally, in 1950, he partnered with Knoll Associates and designed the Bertoia Collection for Knoll, which spawned the wire chair we are now so familiar with, such as the famous 'Diamond chair' a fluid, sculptural form made from a molded lattice work of welded steel, the Bertoia wire barstools and the Bertoia side chairs.  In Bertoia's own words, "If you look at these chairs, they are mainly made of air, like sculpture. Space passes right through them."
