Tis’ the season to take advantage of the beautiful fall weather, not too hot, not too cool…perfect weather is here but it doesn’t last very long. Now’s the time to plan some fun fall activities to get you and the family out of the house before you are all cooped up for the long winter.

  1. Leaf Peepers – Go out and enjoy the wonders of Mother Nature and go leaf peeping. Take a hike and pack a lunch and enjoy the colorful fall foliage. You can look here to find the best times to view peak foliage in your area. A cozy campfire after a day of hiking is the perfect ending to a fall day, don’t forget the s’mores!
  2. Pick of the Patch – Grab the family and head to a pumpkin patch. This time of year picking your own pumpkins is fun way to get into the upcoming Halloween spirit, pun intended. Sometimes the farm will offer hayrides, petting zoos and corn mazes, so you can make a whole day of it.  Pumpkins can be great for decorating and baking. 3. Tailgate Time – Find a local football game and go support the home team! Whether it be high school or professional football game, this a weekend event not to be missed. Go early and tailgate with all the other fans to add to the festive spirit. Bring a grill and fire it up, tailgating recipes here.
  4. Apple Everything – This is the best time of the year to get out and pick you own apples. No apple tastes sweeter than when you pick it right off the tree and take a big juicy bite. My kids love this family tradition and we combine this event with our annual family potluck reunion. After scoring several pounds of apples, its apple everything at my house. Apple pie, apple sauce and of course caramel apples abound for the rest of the month. Look here for apple inspirations of your own.
  5. Curb Appeal – Take a day to enlist the family into some fall yard work. This can be a chore mixed with fun and family time. Rake leaves in to a big pile then jump in them, let the kids help plant tulip bulbs now that will be a nice surprise for them when they bloom in the spring.  Collect the prettiest leaves  and pinecones to use for fall crafts. Take a ride to a local farm or garden store and as a family pick out some fall décor. Seasonal things like hay bales, cornstalks and mum plants can be added to your yard to give it some fall flair. An enjoyable activity like making a scarecrow for your yard really makes the day memorable. Always a crowd pleaser is to take a hot apple cider or cocoa break to warm up if it’s chilly.
