Produced in the late 19th century to the present day, modern furniture is one of the most dominant aspects of furniture design today. As its name implies, modern furniture describes chairs, tables, and other furnishings influenced by modernism, and is characterized by glittering simplicity, the replacement of gilded wood with polished metal, and an overall lightness in weight and appearance. And over the course of the century, various modern furniture designs have been made and proliferated upon the market. But probably one of the most memorable of these designs is the Le Corbusier Chaise Lounge LC4.
When it comes to modern furniture design that exudes both style and comfort to the individual, no other design gives a better example than that of the Le Corbusier Chaise Lounge LC4 by Le Corbusier. Also known by its proper term of chaise longue or long chair, the LC4 Chaise Lounge is a modernist reclining chair designed by renowned Swiss-French architect Le Corbusier in collaboration with interior designer Charlotte Perriand and Pierre Jeanneret. The LC4 Chaise Lounge was initially a prototype design meant for the Villa Church in Paris and was later part of the LC4 collection.
Like most, if not all of Le Corbusier’s designs for furniture, the Le Corbusier Chaise Lounge LC4 is relatively light and simple. The chair is roughly split into three parts: the solid steel base at the bottom, the slightly-curved tubular frame at the middle, and the seat and cushions at the top. The base is made from flat and oblong-shaped pieces of high grade steel covered in black matte enamel and are tipped with plastic ends at the bottom. The frame, on the other hand, is made from the same metal as the base but is curved into a crescent shape and coated with polished chrome. And to complement its hard metal supports, the combination seat/backrest and headroll cushion is fitted with sleek black or white leather. Later productions of the design expanded the upholstery options including brown pony skin and stain-resistant fabric. We have these at a great price for $450 for the White or Black, and $679.99 for the pony hide.
