Kermit the frog said it best when he sang us his song “It’s not easy being green…” This can definitely be true when trying to make our homes environmentally friendly. There is so much misinformation out there on what is and what isn’t “green.” Trying to decipher it is a daunting task. Let’s look at some of the simpler and more basic aspects of being green-ish for your home.

Now that I have returned to the work force after being a stay at home mom for 10 years, my house tends to look like a bomb was detonated inside of it. This is especially true around the laundry room and common areas like the living room/dining room areas. Toys, clothes and dirty dishes multiply and spread like weeds while I am at work. Time to enlist the smallest of soldiers into my housekeeping army and delegate duties, as a good general would in this war against the household chores.

Working for a furniture company has taught me many things, but one thing that will always resonate with me is this “It only takes one strong accent piece to change a space from drab to fab!” This is especially true in seating and dining spaces. Let’s explore some classic chairs that have revolutionized the design world and never go out of style.

Today is my first day back to work after a wonderful week long vacation in the Bahamas. They don’t call it the "Baham-ahhhs" for nothing. I had an amazing time filled with many “ahhh, this is the life” moments. Now that I am back to reality I am going to recapture some of those moments by using my 5 senses to recreate feelings of tropical relaxation in my own home.

A few weeks back we talked about how to de-clutter your home and now that the purge is over, and hopefully you have recovered, we can talk about where to store all the things you decided you can’t live without. I only got through my four year olds room and still haven’t recovered! After a quick break for smelling salts, it's now onward and upward my friends because our home is full of untapped storage opportunities just waiting for us to utilize.

I put my first born, thirteen year old daughter on a plane yesterday to travel back east to see family and friends for a few weeks. It was bittersweet because I know she will have a blast but worry about her traveling alone. I must say the airport personnel at LAX were amazing and went above and beyond in customer service. They gave my family the VIP treatment by allowing us to take her all the way to the gate and get her settled. After a bumpy flight she is now safely enjoying her summer vacation with her family and friends. Her trip and an upcoming one I am going on has got me thinking about packing and how I can make this daunting task easier.

As my birthday quickly approaches, I have been bombarded with emails offering me coupons for everything from a free steak dinner to complimentary yoga classes. It’s amazing how many free things you can do or get on your big day. BirthdayFreebies.com is a website totally devoted to things that are free on your birthday! While not one to turn down a free meal I have found that on my birthday I could literally eat a free breakfast, lunch and dinner plus dessert! If I had the time that is. Not only on your birthday but every day the internet is chock full of freebies and ways to save money. And who doesn’t love to save money and get free stuff?

To look around my house you would think I invented eclecticism. My penchant for yard sales, flea markets and curbside “free” signs has unintentionally made me a trendsetter! Who knew my collection of Buddha statues mixed with colored glass jelly jars would be a design statement. My mismatched collection of styles acquired over the years is born from personal taste mixed with my “can’t resist a bargain” mentality. Eclecticism is defined as "the borrowing of a variety of styles from different sources and combining them" (Hume 1998). This is a hot design trend right now, so let’s be brave and mix things up a little.
