I am not a very artsy and crafty person really. I would like to be but I haven’t really developed that side of me yet. I have great admiration for those of you who are, who not only dream up an idea but act on your imaginative side. I was thumbing through some books this weekend and found an inspiring book.

With the growing epidemic in obesity in children and adults it is time to rethink our societal habits and norms that promote it. I speak from my own observations in and around my own life. I see that a young family member is becoming obese and know it can be reversed for him and many others. Whether you are a parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle, or friend of the family, we all need to be accountable when we see things going in the wrong direction. It is our duty for the sake of the children’s welfare to say something or at least broach the subject or offer suggestions in a non offensive way.

Let’s face it, lighting can be complicated. With terminologies such as lumens, foot candles, and wattages, what is a person to do? There are different kinds of lighting made for different uses. First is general lighting or ambient lighting. This is for generalized lighting overall. Task lighting is for as the name implies working light. Some forms of task lighting are desk lamps, counter lights, and table light. These lights are planned and placed where there is work to be done. Next there is lighting for cabinets and underneath shelves. For lighting pictures, art, or any other item you want to highlight on walls use track lighting, recessed wall washers, or recessed adjustable fixtures.

In any type of design or artistic application you are faced with planning out how the final outcome will look. The process of planning and choosing how the room turns out is in fact, designing. General patterns emerge from looking and comparing various forms of artistic expression.

Okay the process is pretty simple and fun. First enlist someone to help you measure. Measure the length and width of the room in a straight line. Also measure the height of the walls from floor to ceiling. Multiply the length of each wall by the height of the wall. This will be your square footage for the walls.

I have scoured the sources looking for design trends. What are the designer’s doing? In modern interior design I see a lot of animal prints, creams, beiges, black, white, and different tones of gray. This year it is all about varying textures of warmth vs. cool. Warmth is seen with textured fabric, neutral hues, and wood. On the other end of the spectrum is the cool side in modern design. Along with blacks, whites, there are shades of grey and darker shaded purples. The modern design color scheme of coarse goes with the personality of the design, the desired outcome and emotions the designer wants to evoke in the people using the room.

Do you have indoor cats or dogs? Well if you do then you have some unique problems that only pet owners can understand. I have had indoor cats and have envisioned building them something special so that they can climb and exercise and still maintain a level of fitness that they would if they were outdoors too. My cats have stayed indoors more as they aged. A special ceiling design for cats was actually in the movie, The Princess Diaries, Directed by Gary Marshall that came out in 2001. I ran into this little story of an elderly couple who custom built walkways in their home at ceiling length. A fabulous idea if you have the time and talent to build something like that. Something like this can always be done by someone handy. Take a look at this: http://www.shine.yahoo.com/animal-nation/cats-house-couple-redesigns-home-cats-mind.202300439.html .

So you want to redecorate but you don’t know where to start? The first thing is to know what style you want. If you are not sure, browse through design magazines such as Elle Décor or Architectural Digest. What do you like? Do you like Modern, Contemporary, Eclectic, Traditional, or Shabby Chic? Put together a collage of pictures that peak your interest. Decide what specifically you like within these designs.
