To look around my house you would think I invented eclecticism. My penchant for yard sales, flea markets and curbside “free” signs has unintentionally made me a trendsetter! Who knew my collection of Buddha statues mixed with colored glass jelly jars would be a design statement. My mismatched collection of styles acquired over the years is born from personal taste mixed with my “can’t resist a bargain” mentality. Eclecticism is defined as "the borrowing of a variety of styles from different sources and combining them" (Hume 1998). This is a hot design trend right now, so let’s be brave and mix things up a little.

The Fourth of July is upon us and it got me thinking about my past Fourth of July holidays that have come and gone. There has always been a common factor in each one, family & friends. This is the heart and soul of most holidays and the reason we look forward with anticipation to each one. That, the food and an extra day off from work, of course.

Since moving to California I have noticed that not having a basement can really hinder your storage options. When I lived back east basements were where all the things that didn’t fit in the rest of the house would get put. Everything from holiday décor to outdated appliances, totes of outgrown baby clothes and boxes of books. The things we hold on to for who knows what? But now I live in a basement less home and my storage option are limited. Time to de-clutter before I run out of space!

With the everyday hustle and bustle of kids, work, chores, appointments and an occasional thirty minutes on my elliptical machine, relaxing is usually not an option. That elusive word creeps into my brain from time to time and I think why don’t I make time to take time and relax? The world keeps getting faster and faster and sometimes we need to step off the hamster wheel for a bit to save our sanity.

My husband, what would I do without him? There are many times I ask myself this question, but really? What would I do without him?? The thought is terrifying. After returning to the work force after being a stay at home mom for ten years I admittedly didn’t think he could handle the pressure of being a work at home/stay at home dad. As much as I hate to admit it he has proven me wrong, very wrong, as wrong as those crazy folk who thought the Titanic was unsinkable. Here is my public ode to all those husbands out there that step up and dare to go where some men fear to tread like the kitchen, laundry room and the grocery store

The Mid-Century modern style craze has been increasingly gaining popularity again as the baby boomers are now hitting retirement age, selling off households of mid century modern furniture and downsizing to smaller homes and condos. This combined with the world of entertainment featuring the mid-century modern style on TV shows like Mad Men and movies like Pixar’s The Incredibles. This makes for a great opportunity for the next generation of hipsters to jump on the stylistic bandwagon and create their own buzz in the modern furniture world.

As the school year is quickly coming to an end, I have been thinking of ways to properly thank those courageous souls who dedicate their lives to teaching my children. An apple for the teacher just doesn’t cut the mustard these days so every year I look for a unique and special way to let them know how much they mean to my family. I have a child in middle school, elementary school and preschool so finding unique gift ideas can be time consuming. I have come up with some EZ solutions for teacher gifts and will let you in on my findings.

This past weekend we honored those who fought and gave the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. Commonly people do this by attending parades, visiting cemeteries and gathering with family. My father in law is a Vietnam veteran and he spoke at a local ceremony in which he talked about “Heroes” and what that term means to people today as well as what it means to those who are considered heroes. What is a hero? It means different things to different people, that’s for sure.
