I put my first born, thirteen year old daughter on a plane yesterday to travel back east to see family and friends for a few weeks. It was bittersweet because I know she will have a blast but worry about her traveling alone. I must say the airport personnel at LAX were amazing and went above and beyond in customer service. They gave my family the VIP treatment by allowing us to take her all the way to the gate and get her settled. After a bumpy flight she is now safely enjoying her summer vacation with her family and friends. Her trip and an upcoming one I am going on has got me thinking about packing and how I can make this daunting task easier.

As my birthday quickly approaches, I have been bombarded with emails offering me coupons for everything from a free steak dinner to complimentary yoga classes. It’s amazing how many free things you can do or get on your big day. BirthdayFreebies.com is a website totally devoted to things that are free on your birthday! While not one to turn down a free meal I have found that on my birthday I could literally eat a free breakfast, lunch and dinner plus dessert! If I had the time that is. Not only on your birthday but every day the internet is chock full of freebies and ways to save money. And who doesn’t love to save money and get free stuff?

To look around my house you would think I invented eclecticism. My penchant for yard sales, flea markets and curbside “free” signs has unintentionally made me a trendsetter! Who knew my collection of Buddha statues mixed with colored glass jelly jars would be a design statement. My mismatched collection of styles acquired over the years is born from personal taste mixed with my “can’t resist a bargain” mentality. Eclecticism is defined as "the borrowing of a variety of styles from different sources and combining them" (Hume 1998). This is a hot design trend right now, so let’s be brave and mix things up a little.

The Fourth of July is upon us and it got me thinking about my past Fourth of July holidays that have come and gone. There has always been a common factor in each one, family & friends. This is the heart and soul of most holidays and the reason we look forward with anticipation to each one. That, the food and an extra day off from work, of course.

Since moving to California I have noticed that not having a basement can really hinder your storage options. When I lived back east basements were where all the things that didn’t fit in the rest of the house would get put. Everything from holiday décor to outdated appliances, totes of outgrown baby clothes and boxes of books. The things we hold on to for who knows what? But now I live in a basement less home and my storage option are limited. Time to de-clutter before I run out of space!

With the everyday hustle and bustle of kids, work, chores, appointments and an occasional thirty minutes on my elliptical machine, relaxing is usually not an option. That elusive word creeps into my brain from time to time and I think why don’t I make time to take time and relax? The world keeps getting faster and faster and sometimes we need to step off the hamster wheel for a bit to save our sanity.

My husband, what would I do without him? There are many times I ask myself this question, but really? What would I do without him?? The thought is terrifying. After returning to the work force after being a stay at home mom for ten years I admittedly didn’t think he could handle the pressure of being a work at home/stay at home dad. As much as I hate to admit it he has proven me wrong, very wrong, as wrong as those crazy folk who thought the Titanic was unsinkable. Here is my public ode to all those husbands out there that step up and dare to go where some men fear to tread like the kitchen, laundry room and the grocery store

The Mid-Century modern style craze has been increasingly gaining popularity again as the baby boomers are now hitting retirement age, selling off households of mid century modern furniture and downsizing to smaller homes and condos. This combined with the world of entertainment featuring the mid-century modern style on TV shows like Mad Men and movies like Pixar’s The Incredibles. This makes for a great opportunity for the next generation of hipsters to jump on the stylistic bandwagon and create their own buzz in the modern furniture world.

Summer officially kicks off on June 21st and now is the time to plan our weekends around warm weather and being outdoors. Summer also brings the words we dread to hear from our kids, “Mom, I’m bored!” This usually comes about two hours after the bell rings on the last day of school. Alas, fear not! I have compiled some great ideas for inexpensive boredom busters that will keep your kids so busy there will be no time for complaining!

When I met my husband, I could see right away he would make for an amazing dad someday. All it took was seeing him with his cat, Roxy. She was the queen of his apartment and Roxy let me know that indisputable fact as soon as I met her. My husband surely treated her like a queen and I could see his loving and caring personality shine in his love for Roxy. Sixteen years and three kids later, he is a remarkable dad, I was right. This Sunday we honor our dads, grandpa’s, stepdads, and other father figures in our lives with Father’s Day. Such an important figure in our lives deserves a day to relax and just be appreciated for all they do for us. Here are some EZ and memorable ways to celebrate.
