Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman

Jul 7, 2010 9:54:14 AM

If you are looking for a comfortable yet stylish place to sit back, put your feet up and read a good book, look no further than the Eames lounge chair and ottoman.  The Eameses were known for experimenting with new materials and building techniques and employed a molded plywood frame with the lounge chair.  Essentially, several thin layers of wood where glued together under heat and pressure to form the curved shells that form the backbone of the chair.  Embellished with walnut wood veneer and soft, Italian black leather upholstery, this modern classic furniture icon is at once inviting and sophisticated.  Set atop a five-pronged swiveling base, this classic lounge chair features armrests on each side and is composed of three separate cushions with the wood veneer frame attached to each other by metal rods.  The ottoman is also composed of a walnut veneered wood frame with a plush leather-upholstered cushion to rest your tired feet.  The base, which also swivels, matches the base of the chair, albeit with four prongs instead of five.  While both the chair and ottoman swivel, they are stationary for added stability.  This lounge chair, designed by modern furniture designers Charles and Ray Eames in 1956, became so popular that it is still featured in New York’s famed Museum of Modern Art as an icon of modern classic furniture design.

Husband and wife team Charles and Ray Eames are among the foremost modern classic furniture designers of the 20th century.  Married in 1941, the couple moved to California and established a design studio in Venice.  Over the next four decades, the couple tackled modern furniture design, architecture, fine art and filmmaking together, designing their own home in the Pacific Palisades in 1946, which still stands to this day and is a California historical landmark.

We at EZ Mod Furniture are big fans of the work of the talented Eameses and are pleased to offer reproductions of several of their most well-known modern furniture designs, especially the lounge chair.  Not only does EZ Mod make it possible to bring an exciting piece of modern furniture design into your own home or office, but they do so at prices that you can actually afford.  Where most furniture retailers sell reproductions of the Eames lounge chair for as much as $2,100, EZ Mod carries this iconic piece for just $839 and even offers free shipping to anywhere in the continental United States.  EZ Mod Furniture offers style bargains that can’t be beat.

Modern Furniture Design Innovations

Jul 6, 2010 11:51:52 AM

One of the biggest departures of modern furniture design from more traditional furniture design is in the use of materials.  Traditional furniture designers tend to stick with tried-and-true materials such as wood, especially for important furniture pieces such as a coffee table.  Modern furniture designers, however, have experimented with new materials and methods such as acrylic, plastic, fiberglass, metal, glass, and even molded plywood.  The effect of using these more unusual materials makes a big difference in the look and feel of a living room or office.  Acrylic and plastic have the ability to take on shapes and forms that wood cannot, while also having color possibilities that are generally not available from wood furniture.  At EZ Mod Furniture, we are proud to offer some of the finest modern classic furniture reproductions to give your home with the sleek, clean look of modernism.

One of the most versatile and innovative furniture offerings you’ll find at EZ Mod is the set of three acrylic nesting coffee tables.  These simple, three-sided pieces come in either black or clear acrylic to fit your room’s color scheme and are three different sizes to suit your space’s needs.  They function well as both end tables or coffee tables and because they are not attached to each other, can be placed all around your home or office to display plants or artwork, to put your coffee mug on when you want to put it down, or can be used as a convenient place to drop your purse or briefcase when you come home.  The clear set makes an especially useful addition to a room if you want to highlight a pretty rug underneath or interesting wood or tile floor pattern.  Both the clear and black sets are made of high-quality acrylic, which makes them scratch-resistant and built to last.

Not only does EZ Mod Furniture present iconic modern classic furniture designs, but they do so at prices significantly lower than other modern furniture stores.  Both the black and clear sets of acrylic nesting coffee tables would sell for as much as $180 at other stores, but EZ Mod offers the set for just $145.  EZ Mod Furniture also offers free shipping to anywhere in the continental US to help you avoid costly shipping fees.  If you’re looking for a simple, sturdy and stylish coffee table to pull together your home or office, visit our website today to find great deals on modern classic furniture

Most people want their home or office to look smart and stylish.  If you are on a tight budget, however, you might feel the need to sacrifice some of your style in order to be practical.  Your personal style might be the clean, trim lines and innovative shapes of modern furniture design, and if it is, then EZ Mod Furniture is just the place for you to find exactly the pieces for your home or office that you have been looking for.    At EZ Mod, we make it a point to offer quality reproductions of some of the most sought-after modern furniture designs at prices that will save you bundles of money.

EZ Mod Furniture is able to offer you both quality and great prices by selling directly over the internet with no middlemen around to take a cut.  We are able to keep prices low and to ensure that you get the most for your money by working directly with vendors and manufacturing our products in our very own factory.  Where ordering larger items such as sofas or dinner tables over the internet typically gets expensive is when shipping costs are calculated, but at EZ Mod we also offer free shipping to anywhere in the 48 continental United States, without requiring a minimum purchase.  Not only are you saving money with our discount prices, but you’re saving potentially hundreds of dollars in shipping fees as well.  For stylish yet economical modern furniture designs, the choice is simple:  EZ Mod Furniture has the best selection of modern furniture designs at prices you can afford.

Pierre Paulin’s Orange Slice Chair

Jun 28, 2010 10:03:29 AM

While furniture for the home or office must be comfortable and practical, it can also be whimsical and playful.  Chairs do not always have to have the same visual vocabulary, and nobody demonstrates that better than French modern classic furniture designer Pierre Paulin.  Paulin’s “Orange Slice” chair is playful, light, astonishingly simple and even graceful in design –a stark contrast to most accent chairs that come across as heavy and boxy.  Set on a sturdy yet slender polished stainless steel tube frame, the Orange Slice chair is composed of two identically curved, elliptically-shaped halves, one forming the seat and one forming the back rest.  Each half is composed of high density foam and upholstered in any number of colors.  When viewed from the side, the Orange Slice chair almost looks like a tulip opening up from the center with the cushions as its petals and the steel tube frame standing in for a stem.  Each cushion is shaped in a way that resembles an orange slice, giving the chair its rather unusual name.

Paulin has a strong background in sculpture, having studied stone carving and clay modeling in Paris before turning to furniture design in 1958.  Paulin’s sculptural vocabulary is fully evident in the Orange Slice chair, which turns out to be more of a sculpture that is suitable for sitting in than a simple, functional chair.  Paulin’s influence on modern classic furniture design continued to grow and develop with the designs of several different chairs and sofas during the second half of the 20th century and into the 21st, including such innovations as the “Tongue” chair, a low-lying, gently curving lounge chair designed in 1966 and the “Pumpkin” sofa, a solid, three-seat sofa made of one continuous block of fabric and padding, shaped somewhat like a pumpkin, designed in 2007.

EZ Mod Furniture is proud to feature reproductions of Paulin’s modern classic furniture designs, especially the Orange Slice chair.  The simplicity and playfulness of the Orange Slice chair is sure to bring a splash of fun to any home or office.  EZ Mod feature’s this unique chair in either red, yellow or green fabric, as well as off-white or gray microfiber to suit any color scheme.  And where other modern classic furniture stores sell Paulin’s iconic chair for nearly $600, EZ Mod features the Orange Slice chair at just $249.  If you’re looking for something interesting to liven up your home or office furniture, come to EZ Mod today.

Modern Designs in Bedroom Furniture

Jun 23, 2010 1:13:43 PM

When most people think of modern furniture designs, they may envision the straight, simple lines of sofas by Le Corbusier, coffee tables inspired by the sculptural presence of Isamu Noguchi and even the use of such unusual materials as acrylic or plastic.  Most of these items would typically be found in a person’s living room, or even dining room.  Bedroom furniture, however, stubbornly tends to remain ornate carved-wood or metal framed beds with matching dressers and nightstands for most people.  EZ Mod Furniture, however, makes it a priority to bring quality modern furniture design into bedrooms all over the country as well as living rooms, offices and dining rooms.

Even if the majority of bedroom furniture persists in being elaborately carved wooden headboards and matching footboards, or fussy metal frames with floral motifs, EZ Mod is proud to offer several fabric or leather-covered bed with all the simplicity of line and style that is so characteristic of modern furniture design.  EZ Mod’s “Utrecht” bed features a padded headboard and footboard upholstered in Bicast leather with contrasted stitching for a stylish hint of contrasted color.  EZ Mod’s CHO bed is padded and covered with dark twill fabric and features under-mattress storage for those particularly tight on space.  For safety, the bed locks in place when raised to access storage.  Brass-toned nails line the top and side seams of the tall, simple headboard for a dramatic yet refined look.

When it comes to modern furniture design, EZ Mod does not scrimp on quality, but still manages to offer some of the best prices around.  EZ Mod’s queen-sized Utrecht bed would sell for as much as $830 at other furniture retailers, but EZ Mod offers it at the much more budget-friendly $729.99.  The CHO fabric-covered bed would cost you up to $1,500 at other stores, but EZ Mod offers an even bigger savings in this case, selling the bed for $400 less at just $1,099.99.

Just because you need bedroom furniture does not mean you have to settle for the fussy, old-fashioned styles that remind you of your grandmother’s house.  EZ Mod Furniture makes it a point to carry the clean, simple lines of modern furniture design as far into your home as the bedroom.  Besides being a place to sleep, your bedroom should be a place to relax that reflects the modern style of the rest of your house.  If you are looking for stylish furniture to fill your bedroom, come in to EZ Mod Furniture today.

Eero Aarnio

Jun 21, 2010 10:00:51 AM

Some of the most memorable pieces of modern furniture to emerge from the 20th century were designed by Finnish designer Eero Aarnio.  When one thinks of the space-age styles and ideas of the 1950s and 60s, Aarnio’s “Ball” and “Bubble” chairs immediately come to mind.  Their round, pod-like structure and use of new and unfamiliar materials lend the Bubble and Ball chairs a very futuristic feel that is delightful for the modern furniture enthusiast.

Innovative for their use of both fiberglass and plastic, as well as a nearly completely spherical shape that was new in modern furniture designs, the Bubble and Ball chairs were not only popular with the public but frequently used on the sets of television shows and films because of their futuristic look.  Aarnio’s Ball chairs consisted of a hollow sphere of plastic or fiberglass with one side open for someone to sit in.  The Ball chair, which was designed in 1963, was often made of white fiberglass and stood on a matching stand with a round base with padded interior walls and a matching seat.  The hanging version of the chair, called the Bubble chair was designed by Aarnio in 1968 and featured the innovative use of a clear acrylic sphere with a steel frame around the opening.  Unlike the stand version of the chair, the hanging version did not have padded interior walls, but did feature padded back and seat cushions and was suspended by a long chain from the ceiling.  In spite of the clear walls, the Bubble chair provides a closed-off, more private space from the rest of the room, enclosing anyone seated within it in a sphere of relative silence and welcomed solitude.

As one of the best modern furniture retailers around, EZ Mod Furniture features detailed reproductions of Aarnio’s hanging Bubble chairs for your home or office.  With a sturdy ceiling mount and six feet of chain to hang from, the Bubble chair can support up to 300 lbs hanging from your ceiling.  The red fabric back and seat cushions are removable for cleaning.  EZ Mod Furniture prides itself not only on selling quality modern furniture reproductions, but also on having one of the most affordable furniture selections available.  While other modern furniture retailers sell Bubble chair-inspired reproductions for nearly $1,800, EZ Mod competitively prices their version at $899.99.  If you love the look and feel of modern furniture for your home or office, come in to EZ Mod Furniture today for quality, prices and selection you will love.

Le Corbusier’s Lasting Influence

Jun 11, 2010 5:54:02 PM

In the first half of the 20th century, a new generation of designers and architects arose that markedly departed with the styles and artistic ideas that had preceded them.  The invention of mass production techniques heavily influenced them and uniformity of design and style pervaded their work.  If furniture before this group of designers had been painstakingly carved or crafted by hand, the Industrial Revolution encouraged this new group of furniture designers to seek out new materials and styles for furniture that could suitably be mass-produced and ultimately change the way that people viewed their home furnishings.  No longer content with carved wood tables or chairs and ornately brocaded sofas, this group of modern furniture designers explored the uses of steel, plastic and even molded plywood in the making of furniture for the home or office.  One of the most famous designers from among this group was French-Swiss designer, architect and urban planner Charles-Eduoard Jeanneret-Gris, known to us by the name Le Corbusier.

Born in Switzerland in 1887, Le Corbusier is perhaps most famous among furniture designers for his steel and leather sofas.  One of modern furniture design’s most iconic pieces, Le Corbusier’s sofa is constructed of black leather squarish cushions supported by a shiny, steel tube frame.  The overall impression one has of Le Corbusier’s famous sofa is that of a box with portions cut out suitable for sitting on.  By the mid-1920s, Le Corbusier had already written much on urban planning, with his writing focusing on the stark, simple lines and functionality so familiar to industrial spaces.  Once Le Corbusier had conceived this particular style of housing for urban areas, he set about designing furnishings that would match it with a disciplined simplicity of line and function.  Le Corbusier’s sofa was first produced in 1929 and instantly became iconic.  Concerned much more with functionality, the sofas were sturdy and simple enough to match nearly any décor.

Reproductions of this sofa are still prized today and are available in stores such as EZ Mod Furniture.  EZ Mod also carries this modern furniture classic in loveseat or chair versions and the entire set is available in either black or white leather.  And where most modern furniture stores would bring Le Corbusier’s sofa to you for as much as $1,119, EZ Mod Furniture features it for a much more budget-friendly $819.

If you are looking for furnish your home or office in with innovative, clean and stylish modern furniture, come to EZ Mod Furniture today.

The Petal Chair

Jun 7, 2010 6:02:17 PM

Few things evoke the era of space-age style in the 1960s as much as EZ Mod Furniture’s Petal Chair.  Inspired by Danish modern furniture designer Poul Volther’s 1961 masterpiece the Corona Chair, EZ Mod’s Petal chair is sure to delight anyone who is a fan of modern furniture’s more space-age, swinging 60s-inspired phase.  Initially, Volther’s Corona chair was given its name because of its uncanny resemblance to the path of the sun as it moved through its various phases in the sky during an eclipse.

EZ Mod Furniture has taken great pains to re-craft Volther’s Corona chair and its character.  The Petal chair is composed of four elliptically-shaped pads of descending size that appear to be floating atop one another.  In reality, all four pads are held together by a chrome-plated steel frame that provides the chair with some much-needed stability, curving both underneath and behind the four seat pads.  The base of the chair, like the frame, is chrome-plated steel and conveniently swivels for more mobility.  The largest pad forms the comfortable seat with either of both ends gently curving upwards to form armrests.  The remaining three seat pads provide support for the lower back, shoulders and head.  The chair pads tilt back at a relaxing angle to encourage greater relaxation.  EZ Mod Furniture also sells this modern furniture classic with a conveniently matching footstool, also with an elliptically-shaped pad and steel base, to make it even more comfortable.  The chair pads and footstool are all made of velour microfiber and are available in either black or red to suit your room’s color scheme.

While EZ Mod Furniture prides itself on bringing quality reproductions of iconic modern furniture pieces into your homes, it also does so at prices that are affordable for nearly every budget.  The Petal chair, for example, retails for as much as $1,200 at some competitors’ stores.   EZ Mod Furniture, however, sells the Petal chair at a much more budget-friendly $859.  Modern furniture’s great style and design do not mean much when they are too expensive for the average person to be able to afford them.

If you are furnishing your home or office and enjoy the clean, unfussy lines of modern furniture, EZ Mod Furniture should be your first (and last) stop for modern furniture at great prices.
